SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - When you think of a person in law enforcement you may use words like brave, courageous, and protectors to describe them; but the most important description is often left out public servant.

This Hometown Hero is making his service to the Savannah-Chatham community his number one priority. For more 25 years Major Terry Enoch has worn a Chatham County Sheriff's badge working in many aspects in the Department.

Major Enoch is now in-charge of the Enforcement Bureau including street operations and court services.

"The services that I provide here are people services so every day I try to invest in the people that actually go out and do the work I try to give them the tools and resources they need to get the job done," said Enoch.

Recently Major Enoch was also awarded at the State Capitol with an award commending him for decades of service; he says he has always known he would work as a public servant thanks to positive role models in his own life.

"I was raised by my mother to be a public servant she worked in juvenile detention always taking care of other people her life, she served God through serving others and that is something she instilled in all of her kids and so it's somewhat natural for me to be engaged in public service in some aspect ," said Enoch.

For his dedication to service Major Terry Enoch is a WTOC Hometown hero.

On April 10th at Savannah's International Trade & Convention Center, Brethren, local and national leaders, parents and mentees, ordinary citizens of Savannah, and others will gather to honor today's leaders, making a difference for tomorrow's leaders - the youth of the Savannah 100's signature programs - mentoring, education, economic development, health & wellness, and leadership development.

This year's Gala will spotlight the recipient of the Savannah 100's Second Lifetime Achievement Award, persons who have made outstanding contributions to the betterment of Savannah, and - of course - scholarship recipients, and other leaders of tomorrow. Charles Gilyard will be our Gala Program Manager.

If you haven't already picked up your ten tickets, please contact Lloyd A. Johnson at 912-257-8485 or LJohnson@100BlackMenSav.org to make arrangements to do so. We're continuing last year's "Early Bird" pricing policy. For tables and tickets, for which payment in full is received on or before March 1, 2010, price points will remain $75 per person and a table for ten will remain at $750. For tables and tickets, for which payment is received after March 1, 2010 individual tickets will cost $99 per person and a table for ten will cost $990.

Many of our mentees and Collegiate 100 will need help to attend our Gala. We're asking those of us who might be unable to attend the Gala or corporate sponsors to purchase a table for those leaders of tomorrow. The names of sponsoring individuals and organizations will be prominently noted at each sponsored table and in our Gala program.

Corporate contributions and advertising in our souvenir Gala journal provide by far, the most funds which support our scholarship programs, youth programs, and mentees' participation in our National Convention. So we're asking each member and mentee to take personal responsibility for securing at least one page of advertising in our journal. 1. Monthly Membership Meeting: Tuesday, February 9th at 6PM at GA Infirmary, 1900 Abercorn St (nr. 37th St.). Agenda attached. We’ll consider our finances, 14th Annual Gala, committee updates, necessary action on IRS-required Conflict of Interest Policy. Although we’ve got a full agenda, we’re confident that by starting promptly and staying focused on our mission, we’ll be on our way in a timely fashion.

2. Economic Empowerment Program: Our Economic Development Committee, under the leadership of Charles Gilyard and Hasani X, will kick off its Economic Empowerment Program with Johnson H.S. with a Media Day at 10AM on Thursday, February 11th. The program focuses on wealth-building, shadowing several chapter business people, and concludes with modest scholarship awards. Several corporate partners will be present. See attached program description. Please try to be present for media, partners, parents and students to see us.

3. Our 14th Annual Gala is set for Saturday, April 10th at the International Trade & Convention Center. We’ll stay with last year’s ticket prices: $75 for tickets paid for by March 31st; $99 thereafter. The Gala proceeds support our programs, help get our mentees and Collegiate 100 to our National Convention, and provide scholarship funds. We’ll need all hands to help out with the Gala, especially journal ads. More Tuesday.

4. Gary Young Update: In addition to his medication issue, Gary’s been having a tough time on the medical front, too. He contracted an infection, just returned from Piedmont Hospital for surgery, and has medication-induced diabetes. GA Transplant Foundation will match any donations made in his name. 5. The 21st Annual Black Heritage Festival: On Saturday, our chapter along with Leadership Academy mentees was privileged to participate in the 21st Annual Black Heritage Festival, with a program at Rev. Tillman’s First African Church and a silent march to the African Enslavement monument on River St., and ending with us delivering closing remarks at the Haitian Monument in Franklin Sqr. See attached photos (l-r: Tillman, O. Johnson, L. Johnson, Lowery).

6. Read Across America: It’s not too late to sign up to read Dr. Seuss at E. Broad St Elementary School on Monday, March 1st. Contact Kevin Foard at kevFoard72@msn.com for more details. Several brethren have already committed to participate. Kevin is exploring a chapter partnership with Hubert Middle School. More information will be provided tomorrow.

The 100 Black Men of Savannah announced earlier today that Dr. David Satcher, former Surgeon General of the U.S. and Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and presently Director of the Center of Excellence on Health Disparity at the Morehouse School of Medicine, will be the keynote speaker at its Thirteenth Annual Benefit Gala on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at the Hyatt Hotel Savannah, GA.

As one of the world’s leading public health physicians, Dr. Satcher was intimately involved in the development of Unnatural Causes: Is inequality making us sick?, a health & wellness initiative of the 100 Black Men of Savannah, supported by the Healthcare Georgia Foundation, whose main themes are: health and longevity are related to socioeconomic status, people of color face an additional health burden, and our health and well-being are tied to policies that promote economic and social justice.

Dr. Satcher is expected to address health disparities in the U.S. in general and Georgia in particular and startling new findings that suggest there is much more to poor health than bad habits, inadequate health care or unlucky genes and circles in on a slow killer in plain view: the social circumstances in which we are born, live and work, can affect our risk for disease and “excess” death just as surely as germs and viruses.

The 100 Black Men of Savannah, Inc., in partnership with Healthy Savannah will sponsor a community viewing, of "Unnatural Causes: Is inequality making us sick?" at the Jepson Center of the Arts on Thursday, October 16th at 6:00 p.m. Unnatural Causes is a health & wellness initiative of the 100 Black Men of Savannah, supported by the Healthcare Georgia Foundation. Its main themes are: health and longevity are related to socioeconomic status, people of color face an additional health burden, and our health and well-being are tied to policies that promote economic and social justice.

Immediately following the viewing, a distinguished panel, composed of Savannah’s Mayor Otis S. Johnson, State Representative Lester Jackson, other elected officials, community leaders and health care professionals, will engage in a dialogue on the basis of and possible solutions to Savannah’s health inequities. It will provide a platform for 100BMOS members, mentees, constituents and other community-based organizations to develop Savannah and Georgia advocacy for policies that reduce socio-economic and racial health inequalities.

The most recent viewing on September 20th at Armstrong Atlantic State University, for the membership of the Savannah 100, was highlighted a keynote address by State Representative Lester Jackson and the powerful segment, “In Sickness and in Wealth” which dramatized the connections between healthy bodies, healthy bank accounts and skin color, by following four individuals from different walks of life to see how their position in society – shaped by social policies and public priorities – affects their health.

Multi-Generational Health Fair - June 7th.

On Saturday, June 7th, the Savannah 100 will again partner with St. Joseph's/Candler Hospital in sponsoring the Fifth Annual Multi-Generational Health Fair at the Savannah Baptist Center, 704 Wheaton Street, Savannah from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There will e games entertainment and food.

St. Joseph's/Candler will provide free prostate, colorectal, blood sugar and blood pressure screening in addition to free access to health risk assessment and analysis. Registration by June 4th is required for prostate screening; call (912) 819-3368 to register.

12th Annual Gala & Silent Auction

Internationally renowned entrepreneur, Kwame Jackson, delivered a stirring and challenging speech to a sold-out and appreciative audience at the 100 BMOS’s 12^th Annual Gala at Savannah’s Hyatt Hotel on Saturday, April 19, 2008. The net proceeds from the Gala and the accompanying Silent Auction are used to support the 100’s “Four for the Future” youth programs - education, mentoring, health and wellness and economic development.

The occasion also honored the graduating seniors of the Savannah 100’s Youth Leadership Academy – Christopher Adams (Savannah High School) , MeKia Davis (Jenkins High School), Ivory Harding (Windsor Forest High School), Rossana Stewart, II (Jenkins High School) and Patrick Wright (Groves High School) – each of whom received a $1,000 scholarship in support of their higher education.

Paul Hinchey, President and CEO of St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital was awarded the Community Service Award by Savannah 100 President, Henry Lee Perry, for sustained furtherance of the partnership with the 100 Black Men of Savannah and the Savannah community. Treasurer, Robert D. Davis, on behalf of the membership of the Savannah 100, presented the Trailblazers Award to Bertram Scott, James Saunders and Lloyd A. Johnson. Lamar Lawrence was also recognized for his outstanding work in almost single-handedly organizing the Gala. In addition, Special Awards were made to Linda Doswell for her continued work with the Savannah 100’s Youth Leadership Academy, and Silent Auction Committee Members, Connie Johnson, Tammy Boler, Leah Thompson, DiAnette Broadnax, Alethea Raynor, Valerie Thomas and Monique Lawrence. Special thanks are also due to to our Silent Auction consultant, Janister Herring of NeCe' Designs, for her invaluable assistance.

100/Chef Joe Randall Cooking Day Camp

The 100 BMOS, in partnership with Chef Joe Randall, will sponsor a Cooking Summer Day Camp from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15 through Friday, July 18th at Chef Joe Randall’s Cooking School at 5409 Waters Street, Savannah, GA. The Summer Cooking Day Camp is free. Participants must be between the ages of 12 and 16 years, residents of Savannah, GA and interested in developing basic and fun cooking skills.

Under the tutelage of Chef Joe, a world-renowned chef, the 100/Chef Joe Summer Cooking Day Camp aims to broaden the horizons of Savannah youth by exposing them to the preparation, serving and clean-up of simple traditional dishes that can be easily prepared at home and shared with family members.

Because enrollment is limited to ten children, we expect that there will be more applicants than available spaces. Selection of participants will include school attendance, behavior in the classroom and interest in the camp objectives.

100/Heard Promising Pen Pals

The 100 BMOS is partnering with Savannah’s Heard Elementary Academy in a new and innovative writing/mentoring program, Promising Pen Pals, a writing/mentoring program for third-grade students which will provide an exciting opportunity for youth and adults to share experiences and to learn about one another.

Promising Pen Pals matches each Heard third-grade student with a member of the 100 BMOS or a Savannah area business or professional person through written communications. Children get practice in writing, while connecting with an adult mentor. Adults, in turn, get the opportunity to know a Savannah school child and to become a positive force in his or her life. The writing/mentoring relationship will continue throughout the school year and will culminate with the Promising Pal Breakfast in May, 2009 where the students and Pals come together to meet in person for the first time.

Letter-writing will begin before the end of November, 2008 when students and Promising Pals will exchange a picture postcard. We anticipate that each student and Promising Pal will exchange a minimum of six letters or cards between November and May 2009 and that the Promising Pen Pal will attend the Promising Pal Breakfast in May 2009.

We are looking for 100 percent participation from the 100 membership. At a special election of the 100 BMOS held on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, Zaphon R. Wilson, the incumbent financial secretary, was elected to fill the unexpired term of the office of vice-president and Lemuel “Russ” Moore was elected to fill the remaining term of office of financial secretary of the 100 BMOS created by the election of Dr. Wilson to vice-president.

Zaphon and Russ will assume their respective offices immediately and will serve until the next Chapter elections in 2009.

What is S.M.A.R.T.?

Our board will soon require that each committee establish S.M.A.R.T. goals. The following will be helpful as you understand what S.M.A.R.T. is all about.

Smart Goals

Specific - A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal. To set a specific goal you must answer the six "W" questions:

*Who: Who is involved?

*What: What do I want to accomplish?

*Where: Identify a location.

*When: Establish a time frame.

*Which: Identify requirements and constraints.

*Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.

Measurable - Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your goal.

Attainable - When you identify goals that are most important to you, you begin to figure out ways you can make them come true. You develop the attitudes, abilities, skills, and financial capacity to reach them. You begin seeing previously overlooked opportunities to bring yourself closer to the achievement of your goals.

Realistic - To be realistic, a goal must represent an objective toward which you are both willing and able to work. A goal can be both high and realistic; you are the only one who can decide just how high your goal should be. But be sure that every goal represents substantial progress. A high goal is frequently easier to reach than a low one because a low goal exerts low motivational force. Some of the hardest jobs you ever accomplished actually seem easy simply because they were a labor of love.

Timely - A goal should be grounded within a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there's no sense of urgency. If you want to lose 10 lbs, when do you want to lose it by? "Someday" won't work. But if you anchor it within a timeframe, "by May 1st", then you've set your unconscious mind into motion to begin working on the goal.

Annual Scholarship Gala & Silent Auction

Preparations are well underway for The 100 Black Men of Savannah's 12th Annual Scholarship Gala dinner Dance and Silent Auction on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Savannah’s Hyatt Regency Hotel, 2 West Bay Street, Savannah.Kwame Jackson, entrepreneur and Donald Trump’s Apprentice fame is expected to be a special guest. In addition, Savannah's 100 Black Men (100 BMOS) recognize some of Savannah’s citizens who are making a difference in serving our youth.

The web site features a “virtual office” through which members may view previous meeting minutes, relevant articles and documents and a membership directory, including photographs and other member information, an individualized volunteer/mentoring tracking system.

Public access to the web site includes information on the history of the 100, nationally and locally, chapter officers and chairs; membership, chapter programs, event calendar, photos, news, and partners and sponsors.

Democratic Presidential Candidates Debate

On Tuesday, January 15, 2008, the 100 BMOS sponsored a community viewing of the MSNBC Democratic presidential debate, co-hosted by the 100 Black Men of America, at the Bonefish Grill in the Twin Oaks Shopping Center on Abercorn Street, Savannah. Numerous friends, partners and sponsors of the 100 BMOS attended the casual event. In addition to sizing up the candidates, it was a special opportunities for those in attendance to enjoy one another's company in an informal setting. Thanks to Brother Harold Oglesby for proposing this program.

Youth Voter Education Project

State-sanctioned violence against the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other non-violent civil rights demonstrators through 1964, led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1964. That law opened the ballot box to people of color by outlawing such practices as the poll tax and bogus “literacy” tests which effectively disenfranchised people of color throughout the U.S.

It was against this backdrop – 44 years later on January 12, 2008 at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital’s Data Center – that Savannah’s Youth Leadership Academy, under the sponsorship of the 100 Black Men of Savannah and the leadership of Bro. Harold Oglesby, conducted a computer-generated voter education project.

Following a video presentation of the various presidential candidates, the 43 leaders of tomorrow heard a presentations by Rasheem Wallace, a 2004 graduate of Savannah State University who heads Chatham County Young Democrats. Brother Lloyd Johnson, stressing that “all politics is local”, gave a personalized description of the challenges involved in his successful election campaign for the City Council of Takoma Park, MD. The group then broke into teams and, utilizing computers, evaluated and compared candidates respective positions.

While the result of the youths' poll was not publicly disclosed, Savannah 100 President, Henry Lee Perry, II, said “In order for freedom in a democracy to survive and thrive, it needs all Americans – young and old, Black, White and Brown to participate in the political process. I’m pleased that we were able to help make a start in that process.”

The Board has endorsed Ken Boler’s proposal to conduct a quarterly raffle in support of the 100 BMOS programs.The proposal calls for a drawing during February, 2008 for a New 32” LCD Flat Screen TV ($500 Cost). Each member of the 100 BMOS would be responsible for selling/purchasing at least 25 tickets @ $5 each ($125) and each of our 40 “junior members”/mentees would be responsible for selling at least 10 tickets @ $5 each ($50).

Silent Auction

Elections for Chapter officers for the 2007-2009 term were held on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at 1900 Abercorn St., Savannah under the oversight of our newly-established Nominating Committee with the following results:

This was our first contested election in recent years and, as an indication of members’ commitment, it was hotly contested and the results were exceedingly close. STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETINGS:

Louis Fair L112835@aol.com reports that he has completed his strategic planning meetings with the Economic Development, Education, Health and Wellness, Membership and Mentoring Committees. He is in contact with Levi McIntosh of the National Board and will send a consolidated draft to Dr. McIntosh for further consultations. Once those consultations are completed, the Chapter Board will consider priorities, financial allocations and so forth.

All concerned believe that we are well on track to meet our October 30, 2007 target date with the National Office.
